Drama

The Drama Department occupies two main areas, The Gatehouse located on The Close and The Menzies Hall located on the Folkestone Road.

The Staff

Jude Single BA (Hons), PGCE, read Drama and English at Loughborough University of Technology and studied for a postgraduate qualification at Liverpool University. She is responsible for the teaching of Drama throughout the school.

The Curriculum

In years 7, 8 and 9 all pupils are taught discrete Drama lessons in mixed ability groups; our programmes of study at this level are designed to introduce students to the art of improvisation, the language of theatre, theatre review, movement to music and masks.

Priory pupils demonstrate their skills

At GCSE, we follow the Edexcel specification for Drama and Theatre Studies - here the emphasis is on group work and the planning and execution of a play to be performed to an audience and we now also offer Expressive Arts at this level.

At Sixth form level we follow the Edexcel specification for Drama and Theatre Studies AS and A2. Here candidates enjoy programmes of study based around Caryl Churchill's "Top Girls", "Antigone" by Sophocles and Jean Anouilh and the "Beggar's Opera" by John Gay.

Other information

We work hard to develop trust relationships within all teaching groups, as we believe students must feel free to express themselves openly and creatively if real progress is to be made.

We are keen to promote cross curricular links within the department. A recent project run in conjunction with the Science department resulted in a Science based play "Water Works" aimed at Key Stage 2, with which the school successfully toured local primary schools.

There is a variety of arts-based activities available to all students at the school, which are run by the Department. These include trips to the cinema, membership of the weekly and evening Drama clubs, which culminate in end of term productions, and visits have ranged from a very physical piece of drama "stones in his pockets" in the West End, to a trip to the Christmas pantomime "Aladdin" at our local theatre for all first and second form pupils.

School Performance
The highlight of the year has to be our recent school production of "Grease"  which played to a packed house for three consecutive nights. This really was a mammoth project only made possible by the total co-operation between the different departments involved. Over one third of the school participated in some capacity in this production. The last night was rounded off with a 60s style party when the cast members grabed the audience for a dance.
