Geography

The Geography Department is part of the Humanities Faculty and is located at the top of the Kent Block in K8 on Middle Ground.

Rupert Hill MA (Oxon) Hons., P.G.C.E. teaches most year groups within the College. He is a specialist in Human Geography but has a particular interest in Glaciation and has studied glaciers in Norway, the Alps and the Himalayas. He has worked in The Sudan at a Government Higher Secondary School for 2 years and has travelled extensively in the Third World.

Miss Elizabeth Tresidder, BA Hons, is an Old Dovorian and second in charge of Leamington House. She graduated from Durham University before joining Dover College in September 2007. A Grade 8 Trumpetist, she also runs the History Society and is the Editor of the pupils' newsletter called "The Close".

The Curriculum

Geography is a popular subject at Dover College with many pupils opting to take both the GCSE and AS/A2 courses. Results are consistently good and pupils often do better in their Geography than in other subjects. At KS3 we follow the National Curriculum but like to develop ideas which are of particular interest to current pupils. The multi-cultural community allows individuals to learn from their peers about countries all over the world.

Pupils take the AQA at GCSE and the OCR at AS and A2. Textbooks are regularly updated and pupils are encouraged to use ICT.

Pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 follow Heinemann's Geography in Action course alongside a study of local and national geography. Pupils in years 10 and 11 studying GCSE Geography follow the Collins Educational course of Geography in Place while the Sixth Form will be using AS and A2 specialist books.

Geography remains a lively and popular subject at Dover College. Regular field trips to Scotland, the North of England and the surrounding locality are essential to the course and prove to be informative, educational and inspiring. We live in a global community and what better way to understand it than through the subject of Geography? Whether it is hurricane Mitch, Mount Etna, the green-house gases conference at Beunos Aires, the GM debate or the impact of the banning of fox hunting on the rural community, Geography has a home for it - and a place to find out more is at the Geography Department at Dover College.

Geography at Dover College is for those who have

  • Concern for the planet
  • An interest in people
  • An enquiring mind
  • A love of the landscape
  • An understanding of current affairs
  • A desire to understand the environment one lives in
