The ICT Centre is based on lower ground and consists of two networked rooms with 20 workstations in each room. One of the rooms also has a projector so that work may be displayed on the main whiteboard.
The Staff
Michael Vanderhoeven BA (Hons), PGCE studied at Leeds University and is the Head of ICT. His interests include mountaineering, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, canal holidays and most sports.
Linda Binfield joined the Information and Communications Technology department at Dover College in 2005.
The Curriculum
The curriculum at Dover provides ICT training to all students in years 7, 8 and 9. This concentrates on the use of industry standard software within the framework of real world exercises, so that pupils become not only proficient in the use of computers, but also get a deeper understanding of how the world works.
By the end of year 9 all pupils should have had both practical and theoretical experience of Handling Information, Control and Measuring, Modelling and Communicating Information.
At GCSE level students are able to opt for an ICT course with the OCR board based around a series of units in all aspects of computer technology. These are assessed internally throughout the duration of the course and externally moderated. We also offer ICT at AS/A2 level. All subjects now use ICT within their curriculum area and incorporate IT within their schemes of work, so there are regular visits to the centre from students of all subjects.
Other Information
ICT is an exciting subject for us all, made more so by its rapid rate of development. At Dover we are determined that all of our students will be able to make the best use of this important technology.
