Physical Education

Dover College places a strong emphasis on sport.

The main aims of the Physical Education Department are to "develop confidence and individual talents" through a sporting environment.

We aim to achieve this by:

  • Implementing a broad range of sporting opportunities which promote a positive attitude to healthy lifestyles for all pupils.
  • Promoting social and moral development through participating in sporting activities therefore contributing to the general ethos of Dover College
  • Creating an inclusive environment where pupils are encouraged to strive to reach their full potential
  • Developing essential team building skills that will be used in all aspects of school life and pupils' future careers
  • Maintaining links with clubs and organisations outside of the school for the benefit of pupils who display a particular talent.

Physical Education is a fundamental part of the curriculum.

Priory (Year 7 and 8) pupils receive one hour and ten minutes of core Physical Education (2 lessons) each week, with a further three hours and forty minutes (6 lessons) of games a week.

In Year 9, pupils receive one hour and ten minutes of core Physical Education (2 lessons) each week, with a further three hours and forty minutes (6 lessons) of games a week. Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in two hours and twenty minutes of activities, ranging from fencing and sailing to basketball and Olympic weightlifting.

In Year 10 and 11, GCSE Physical Education (AQA) is taught by experienced members of staff, with 68% results of A* to C being achieved by students in 2007.

AS/A2 Sports Btec is offered since 2008 with pupils already achieving A level equivalents.

The core programme follows the National Curriculum guidelines and as a result the pupils receive a broad and balanced range of activities. The activities include invasion games; net/wall games, dance, gymnastics, outdoor education and health related fitness.

The facilities available at Dover College are excellent. The school has 4 football pitches, 2 hockey pitches, and a magnificent cricket ground and cricket nets.

It also has an athletics track with room for field events in the summer term. There is a sports hall with a modern fitness suite and a separate basketball court.

The school is also lucky to have a top class astro-turf training area within the school grounds and eight grass tennis courts.
