Miss Bean took the Pre-Reception children out on the Close to experience the effects of the wind.

The children used a kite, a parachute and some bubbles. What fun it is to learn through play!

Year 6 Geography Trip to the Stour

Dover College Year 6 pupils are setting off to Canterbury for a special Geography day.

Dover College Year 6 pupils travelled by minibus to Canterbury for a Geography Field Trip. Two ladies from the Canterbury Environmental Education Centre greeted our group.

We walked along the Stour River and stopped in the Westgate Gardens to carry out an experiment.

We measured how fast the water was flowing by using a 10 metre tape. We threw a dog biscuit into the water and timed how long it took to travel 10 metres. We tried this on both sides of the river and in the middle. The flow was faster in the middle.

After that we went back to the Nature Reserve where we played environmental games, had tea and carried out another three experiments.

One of the games consisted of acting out what happened to water molecules through various stages. From rivers, to evaporation, to the clouds and then the condensation and precipitation cycles. It was fun and most of the girls chose to be light and graceful snow flakes whilst the boys went for hale and sleet.

The experiments were about rain water reaching the ground depending on thesix different trees they had to battle.

We also measured the depth of water with a weighted rope and a metre stick.

And last but not least, we looked at the types of grounds and how easily or not it is for water to seep through. We used funnels, paper filters and we filled these with either gravel, sand, stones or soil. We then poured 50ml of water and timed for one minute before measuring how much water had come out.

It was a good day. Thank Mr Fairclough and Miss Morley for taking us there!

Dover College pupils join in the act!

Dover College Years 5 and 6 started a couple of new activities this term, including Performing Arts.

Mary from Sherbert Moon now comes on Thursday lunchtimes to work with our Junior pupils.

The group of boys and girls fully enjoyed coming up with ideas and acting them in small groups in front of the rest of their friends and Mary.

The session finished with a briefing about next week's emphasis on them being scientists on a South Pole expedition.

Recognising pupils' abilities and skills is all part of life at Dover College's Infant and Junior School. We find that it helps build the children's confidence. An entire book shelf of cake books.

Dover College's Director of Studies, Mr Ellerington, showed he had hidden talents. The Infant and Junior School teachers at Dover College were all given a personalised iced sponge cake which led the Head, Mrs Miller, to award a special Gold Star in the weekly Chapel Assembly.

It seems, the Ellerington familly had a rather busy weekend baking and decorating all the cakes, before assembling them to resemble a book shelf. I am sure you will agree when looking at the picture that the Gold Star was indeed well deserved!

Congratulations to Agnethe for being awarded the First Gold Star of the Year. It takes 100 House points to get a Bronze Star, 250 for a Silver and a whopping 500 for a Gold. Keep up the great work!

Happy Chinese New Year

Year 2 pupils from Dover College presented Assembly with facts about the Chinese New Year.

The 14th February 2010 will see the start of the Year of the Tiger and many will be celebrating all around the world.

Did you know that the Chinese calendar has been in use for a lot longer than the International Calendar. Whilst it is 2010 in England, it is 4707 in China!

Haiti Fund Raising from Dover College

Dover College pupils put on a non-uniform day to raise money for Mary's Meals, a charity already present in Haiti. Well done Dover College for raising an amazing £1380.66 These funds will help provide meals to many children in Haiti so thank you all for your support.

Year 3 and Year 4 pupils talked about Pele the famously talented footballer. The children were amazed to hear that football could unite people all over the world, even stopping a war in Nigeria for a couple of days.

Happy Hippies Raise Money for School Charity

Pupils, parents and teachers all dressed-up as hippies for the day, raising money for our School Charity of the Year: Red Balloons. This is one of the many events which take place in order to help gather pennies and turn them into pounds.

Dover College was out en masse, for the eleventh year running Saturday 26^th September, walking from Sandwich to Dover on their annual sponsored walk. This year Red Balloon will benefit from the School's efforts and it is hoped that at least £6,000 will be raised during the course of the year.

Head Boy and Head Girl 2009/2010

Laurence and Naomi are this year's Head Boy and Head Girl. This appointment is never made lightly by the Head of the Infant and Junior School, Mrs Miller, as they are very important roles.

The Head Boy and Girl are expected to represent the school at events and lead the Prefects in their duties. They must therefore have the skills to speak in public and address adults as well as being able to be fair.

The entire Dover College community came together to celebrate another year gone past... and what a year it was! From doubling the size of the Infant and Junior School to raising the highest level of money for the charity of the year: the Guide Dogs Association, you may ask what else could there be to celebrate? Academic achievements were not the only ones on the list and what makes Dover College pupils who they are is all the extra package that comes with life in our school. Our Upper Sixth Form pupils leaving today certainly will surely benefit from the skills they acquired whilst at Dover College. We wish them well for their life beyond the Close. Enjoy the pictures!

PJ Day

Members of the Junior School Council came up with a new idea to raise further funds for the charity of the year- the Guide Dogs' Association. This half term they came up with the idea of a pyjama day instead of a plain clothes day. Bright posters were designed by the children to advertise the event. Everyone wore PJs to school including mums and dads who attended the Friday celebration assembly. You will be pleased to know that the school has already raised enough through various activities, to support one guide dog and is well on its way to having enough for a second. Mrs Miller said that she was very proud of the children's enthusiasm to raise the money for the second dog and was particularly impressed that parents were so keen to be involved. It is testament to the community spirit of Dover College that our parents and pupils come together to support those in need. Look out for more events next term! We really look forward to following the progress of the new puppies.

National Book Day at Dover College

Pupils form the Infant and Junior School at Dover college have fully embraced National Book Day by centring a whole week around the theme of Super heroes. The week, organised by Rachel Morley (year 6 teacher), consisted of many fun packed ideas for the children to try. The children began the week by bringing in their favourite book and participating in a book speed dating activity to encourage each other to read from a wider variety of Authors and styles. On Tuesday a book illustrator named Charlotte Firmin joined the Infant and Junior School, to work with year groups creating illustrated stories centred around super heroes and super powers. This was the highlight of the week for many children, who were truly inspired by the illustrator's talents to make their stories unfold before their very eyes! Buzzing with ideas the children then set to work designing their own super heroes and creating individual stories. Other tasks the children have partaken in include designing a book token competition as well as designing a book sleeve for their super hero stories. A fun, insightful week was had by all.
