The Gate House on a frosty morning.
|
The Gatehouse is another of the original buildings of St Martin's Priory, although it was re-built in 1320 for reasons that are lost in the mists of time. When the College bought the building, it lay in ruins, having fallen into disrepair after the reformation when the Priory site was taken over for agricultural purposes. Having been re-built again when the College was founded in 1871, it has various seen service as the school library, the Bursary, the Headmaster's office and reception are for the school, the Drama Department classroom and Old Dovorian Office, a classroom for the senior pupils of the Infant and Junior Department and now as the Music Classroom for the Infant and Junior Department.
A magnificent landmark on the site, it is greatly appreciated by the whole Dover College community except for those driving high vehicles that can barely squeeze through.
