The Close is at the heart of Dover College. All of the School's accommodation is located here around a large grass area. Most of the teaching blocks are to be found to the north of the Close on Middle Ground, elevated above the Close by about 10 metres.

Part of the Close is laid out for grass tennis courts during the Summer months with rounders, cricket practice and football kick-abouts also being popular.

There can be very few schools in the country with such a tranquil and beautiful haven for its community, especially in the heart of a town.

The School grounds team keep the Close in excellent condition throughout the year. The grass is always well groomed and the flowerbeds, which surround the grass, are in full bloom as often as possible; the display of crocuses around the perimeter in spring is wonderful.

Old Dovorians and visitors alike enjoy the environs of The Close.
