Dover College Prep School was delighted join the eco-friendly schools of Kent and Medway for the KM Charity Team Green School Awards 2020, which took place at Ashford International Hotel on Thursday, 13th February.
In its fifth year, this initiative praises schools for giving its pupils the knowledge and motivation to help protect our planet. The 27 schools attending the stunning ceremony all received a district award whilst only seven achieved the accolade of county champion with Dover College Prep School being named Green Champion.
Judges were particularly impressed with our curriculum topic, ‘Global Dimension’ that looked at worldwide environmental issues not just those in our immediate surroundings. The noted how enthusiastic the pupils were and how initiatives quickly spilling out of the classroom and beyond!
Pupils in the Prep School have purchased recycling bins, created posters on recycling as well as water and electricity conservation, have banned single-use plastics, have taken part in the EDF Energy Switch-Off Fortnight, are recycling crisp packets for Kent Air Ambulance and even recycling their clothes via the Salvation Army’s Recycle with Michael campaign. In addition, during forest school sessions, the pupils are constructing a greenhouse made out of 2 litre water bottles – we look forward to seeing the finished building!
Having won the Overall Green Champion Award in Kent, we now look forward to representing the school at the national assessment panel later in the year.
