The Sixth Form experience at Dover College is rich in diversity with endless opportunities and social events to create an enjoyable learning experience and develop our students’ confidence throughout their stay with us. It is our philosophy to help students to become well rounded individuals and prepare them for what is to come.
Sixth Form is a challenging time when important choices are made in preparation for the world of Higher Education and employment. It is a time when there is more freedom to select new subjects, to develop new interests, to make new friends.
Academically, Sixth Form pupils have the option to select one of two pathways on our exciting new curriculum, our A-Level + programme or our Careers programme focusing on BTEC qualifications.

Within the Sixth Form, students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own performance and wellbeing in preparation for life outside of school. There are a range of activities such as the established Young Enterprise program, completing the highly respected Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and earning a position as one of our school senior prefects to help lead the school, allowing them to develop leadership and public speaking skills. Our Sixth Form pupils are given different opportunities throughout their stay with us and can take the lead on weekly assemblies each term, become digital ambassadors and/or a peer mentor. They can also join in the food committee meeting each week and as a result, quickly become role models for the younger years.
Dover College does not have academic requirements for entry to the Sixth Form, although the College does look carefully at academic records from previous schools. Prior to entry, all pupils are invited to have a taster day in College within their prospective year group to see first-hand the opportunities that will be available if they join our sixth form.
If a pupil is moving from another school into the Lower Sixth they will be asked to bring examples of their current work in Mathematics, English, Science, a Language (if possible) and from their favourite subject (if one has not been previously mentioned), as well as their two most recent school reports. The prospective pupils will also have an informal interview with the Headmaster (or in his absence, the Deputy Head Academic) and will discuss their favourite subjects, hobbies, pursuits and plans for the future after school to ensure they are supported with their transition into the Sixth Form and best academic pathway is chosen.
Dover College was the first school in the UK to formally create an International Department back in 1957; initially pupils came only from NATO countries, but now the College has representatives from across the globe. With over 30 different nationalities at any one time, lifelong friendships are easily formed and networking possibilities set in place. Pupils quickly become a part of the special community that is Dover College. Each international pupil’s English is tested upon arrival before an individual programme of studies can be put in place. Immersion in English and lessons with peer groups help prepare candidates for IGSCE and IELTS examinations.
“Dover College has taught me so many things over the past two years such as leadership skills, working within a group environment and how to take control of my learning, whilst Dover College offers great opportunities in academic studies. The college also offers great pastoral support within the classroom and in our houses. Houseparents are always there to offer help in times of need whether it be with classwork or personal problems. Everyone is made to feel welcome within the Dover College community which really adds to the family feel we are proud to have. The college also strives outside the classroom offering many extra-curricular activities ranging from sports to The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.” – Tul Lekhyananda, Upper Sixth.
Visitors to our campus regularly comment on the warm and friendly environment that nurtures and cares for the children entrusted to us. This gives them the best chance of flourishing whilst both at the College and beyond. We pride ourselves on the strength of relationships that develop within our school community, which is further enriched by the diversity of our children. Our pupils thrive in an environment where they are well-known and cared for by staff, and where they feel happy and confident. Family values such as mutual respect, tolerance for others and kindness form the core principles for everyone within the College. You will see happy children with a real sense of purpose in a relaxed but safe and structured environment.
