Why choose Dover College?

Dover College is a school with a rare sense of place and purpose. For over 150 years, pupils have been educated here in a setting shaped by history, we are proud of that tradition, but we are not held still by it. We use it as a foundation for a modern, warm and ambitious education in which every pupil is known, valued and encouraged to make the very most of their time here.

At the heart of Dover College is a promise: we are unwaveringly pupil focussed.  Our pupils are not anonymous. They are seen, understood and supported as individuals. We want them to achieve well, but also to grow in confidence, character and kindness. Our aim is that pupils leave Dover College with strong outcomes, but also with a strong sense of who they are and what they can contribute. We call this their Personal Best.

Tradition, Inclusion, Community and Kindness

Our TICK values, Tradition, Inclusion, Community and Kindness, shape the daily life of the school. They can be seen in the way pupils greet one another, take part, look after younger children, serve the wider community and learn to belong.

Dover College is large enough to offer breadth, but small enough for pupils to be genuinely known. This balance means children can be stretched without being lost, supported without being limited and encouraged without being pressured into becoming someone they are not.

We are an inclusive school in the fullest sense. Difference is welcomed, dignity matters and kindness is expected. Pupils learn that they are part of something larger than themselves: a school, a community, a tradition and a shared future.

Time well spent at Dover College

We are committed to creating a school life that feels purposeful, varied and rich. Pupils should look back on their time here and know that it mattered: that they tried new things, found their voice, built confidence, made friends and learned habits that will stay with them.

This commitment runs through our academic work, our pastoral care, our boarding, our co-curricular programme and the many opportunities pupils have beyond the classroom.

A distinctive curriculum

Our curriculum is shaped around eight core competencies. These describe the habits of mind and heart that help pupils not only to achieve, but to flourish:

Self-Knowledge and Confidence; Resilience and Tenacity; a Personal Best Mindset; Curiosity and Independent Thinking; Communication and Collaboration; Empathy and Kindness; Leadership, Service and Initiative; and Global and Cultural Awareness.

These competencies help pupils understand themselves, work well with others and approach the world with confidence and generosity. They also connect directly to the life of the school: in lessons, in houses, in sport, in the arts, in service and in leadership.

Learning beyond the classroom

Dover College offers a vibrant co-curricular programme across sport, academic societies, adventure, the arts, outdoor learning and charitable service. With more than 50 activities across the week, pupils are encouraged to take part, try something new and discover where their interests may lead.

Our coastal location gives pupils opportunities that are genuinely distinctive. Through our sailing programme, pupils learn confidence, resilience and teamwork on the water. Sailing asks young people to respond to challenge, work with others and trust themselves in a changing environment.

Our Hope Farm Curriculum gives pupils in Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8 the opportunity to learn in a real working farm environment. They develop practical skills, curiosity, responsibility and a meaningful connection with the land. It is learning that is active, memorable and rooted in the real world.

Transport and wraparound care

We understand the practical demands of family life. Dover College provides a pick-up and drop-off minibus service from several locations across Kent, with current routes including Ashford, Folkestone, Hythe, Sandwich, Deal, Walmer and surrounding villages.  Routes are reviewed regularly so that, as far as possible, we meet the needs of our families.

We also offer breakfast and after-school provision, supporting families from 7.30am until 5.20pm for the Prep School and we are able to provide care until 9pm for the Senior School. This gives children a calm and positive start to the day and our families a school day that works around the realities of modern family life.

The Dover College difference

The Dover College difference is found in the combination of things: our history, our size, our values, our coastal setting, our boarding and day community, our sailing, our farm curriculum, our co-curricular breadth and our commitment to each pupil’s Personal Best.

Above all, it is found in the way pupils are known. This is a school where young people are encouraged to take part, to grow, to serve, to be kind and to make the most of their time. That is why families choose Dover College.
