The Sixth Form Experience

Success in the Sixth Form comes from making the most of every opportunity

At this stage, our goal extends beyond simply delivering subject knowledge—we are committed to helping students develop a growth mind-set. This means nurturing not only understanding and curiosity, but also building the confidence to take initiative, manage responsibilities, reflect on progress, and adapt to new challenges.

These are the qualities that underpin success in further education, future careers, and life more broadly. As students progress through the Sixth Form, they will be supported in becoming independent, self-aware learners who are ready to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.

One of the key distinctions of Sixth Form life is the increased level of independence. Outside of timetabled lessons, students are trusted to manage their own study periods and organise their workload in a way that best supports their progress. They also have the opportunity to choose from a range of games and sporting activities, allowing for a more personalised and balanced experience.

This newfound freedom is both exciting and significant—it marks a shift towards greater personal responsibility. With it comes the need for clear goals, a proactive mind-set, and effective systems for managing time and work. Developing these habits now will not only support academic success but will also prepare students for the demands of life beyond school.

In the Sixth Form, students have the opportunity to tailor their academic journey by choosing from a range of qualifications. Whether selecting the traditional A Level route or opting for the more vocational BTEC pathway, every student will be both stretched and supported to reach their full potential.

The academic demands are greater than ever before, and with that comes the chance to grow. Sixth Form study is about more than absorbing content—it is about applying knowledge with insight and independence. Students will develop higher-level academic skills: conducting research, thinking critically, reading widely beyond the curriculum, and producing work that is analytical, objective, and well structured.

This academic development is further enhanced by the opportunity to undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Through the EPQ, students pursue an area of personal interest, plan and structure their own research, and present their findings in a scholarly manner. Success in the EPQ is a powerful indicator of a student’s ability to manage academic rigour—an asset highly valued by universities and employers alike.

Life in the Sixth Form extends well beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to embrace a wide-ranging enrichment programme designed to broaden horizons and foster personal growth. From volunteering in the local community and taking part in peer mentoring, to representing the College in sport or applying for a leadership role such as Prefect in the Upper Sixth—every opportunity helps students build confidence, develop leadership skills, and work collaboratively with others.

A dedicated team of teachers and House staff who provide guidance on both academic and personal development supports this holistic approach. The Head of Sixth Form, Miss Hedley, and the Deputy Head of Sixth Form, Miss Smith, take pride in offering thoughtful mentorship that goes far beyond simply encouraging more study. Their support—rooted in genuine care, expertise, and individual coaching—ensures that every student is encouraged to achieve their academic best. Every Sixth Former leaves Dover College with a wealth of skills and knowledge as well as an experience they will never forget.
